An audit conducted by the City shows that 42 percent of children exposed to TB patients have not been screened for the disease.

UCT head of the Division of Pulmonology, Professor Keertan Dheda, although newborns are vaccinated against the disease, it only gives limited protection until the ages of 10 or 12. It does not protect against adult pulmonary (lung) TB.
