The UCT Lung Institute is proud to announce the inaugural Sleep Course to be hosted at the UCT Lung Institute. The one-day course to be held on Friday 7 October 2011 features leading authorities in the sphere of Sleep Studies and is designed very much as an interactive symposium to maximize the learning potential of such a day

Professor Virend Somers of Harvard University has produced significant work in the field of sleep disorders and cardiovascular medicine where he has published extensively exploring the neural, genetic and vascular mechanisms linking sleep to cardiovascular disease. Professor Somers will be leading the symposium and supported by numerous experts from a number of different disciplines at the University of Cape Town & Groote Schuur including the Divisions of Neurology, Endocrinology as well as ENT surgery

Learning Goals:
  • Understanding fundamentals of sleep physiology
  • Greater insight into the Pathophysiology of OSA
  • Review of new diagnostic modalities
  • Overview of therapeutic options in OSA including both medical devices and surgical options
  • Hands-on interaction with trade sponsors reviewing diagnostic and therapeutic interventions
  • Practical session interpreting sleep studies and clinical implications
