Study discovers new TB strain in South Africa

A new study has found that two thirds of patients with extensive drug-resistant TB (XDR-TB) have incurable TB.

XDR-TB is resistance to four key TB antibiotics. TB is still the leading cause of death in South Africa among both men and women. Researchers tracked 237 patients with XDR-TB from the Western Cape and the Northern Cape over a period of six to seven years during this study, the first of it kind.

The findings which were published in Lancet Respiratory Medicine focused on XDR-TB because many patients have resistance beyond XDR-TBare untreatable and end up dying after being discharged from hospital.
